I just left the pre-opening tour of the new Alfred Cunningham drawbridge over the Trent River in New Bern, N.C.
After nearly 3 years of construction, today at 11:00 am. the bridge should be open for business.
This critical link in the downtown traffic pattern of New Bern will make access to the downtown area faster and quicker. The view is not bad either!
It’s a bluebird day in New Bern this morning and we should have 70 degree temps this week end.
Come see the bridge!

I attended a meeting at Brinson Memorial School last night that was a public forum on the proposed zoning the County is developing for Township 6 & 7 through which the US 70 East Corridor runs.
This area has seen rapid growth in both residential housing and commercial enterprises in the past several years.
This is the first time county zoning has progressed this far in recent memory.
Commissioner Steve Tyson, members of the County Planning Dept. , other public officials as well as residents and business owners turned out to get the first public overview of the plan.
At this time nothing is “written in stone” however three classifications where discussed as residential, commercial and mixed use.
Questions by the public where answered by the officials on hand.
The US 70 East Corridor is the fastest growing area of Craven County. County officials are trying to balance the needs and desires of area residents, business owners, Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, MCAS Cherry Point, Havelock and New Bern for the best interests of all involved.
The zoning as represented last night appears to be very general in nature.
More to come on this I’m sure.
The Hwy 43 Connector is now open! This road, N.C. Hwy 43 crosses US. Hwy 70 several miles west of New Bern and provides an alternative to the Glenburnie/ Neuse Blvd. route for people heading North towards Greenville/Washington or towards the eastern part of the county. The speed limit is 55 in most areas and is being policed actively. Enjoy and drive the speed limit.
The Trent River Bridge downtown is still scheduled to open on Nov. 1, 2009. After being closed for 2 plus years this project is still on track and looking good. The bridge-tender house is be assembled now.
The Broad Street project, while painful to downtown visitors and residents alike is still on schedule, according to Danny Meadows, Public Works/City of New Bern. Things should really start shaping up for the downtown area Oct./November with completion in time for the New Bern 300th celebration.
Area N.C. D.O.T. officials have announced the southern leg of the U.S. Hwy 17 by-pass around New Bern is now starting. This long awaited and needed improvement is part of the Federal program to 4 lane U.S. 17 through N.C. The by- pass for now will run from the Clarks area/U.S. 70 south to the Rhems area near the Jones/Craven county line.
